Der Rheinische Münzverein war ein Zusammenschluss von Kurfürsten, die durch Münzprägerechte aus der Goldenen Bulle von ( 1356 ) ausgestattet sind, vornehmlich die von Mainz, Trier, Köln und Pfalz . Später kam zeitweise Jülich durch einen Beitritt am 20. März 1419 hinzu. Durch räumliche Verzahnung ihrer Territorien hatten diese Fürsten oft gleiche Interessen, wovon auch gemeinschaftliche Münzverträge zeugen.

Die wichtigsten Münznominale des rheinischen Münzvereines waren der rheinische Goldgulden und auch Weißpfennig.

Geschichtlicher Hintergrund

Nach 1300 ging die Periode des regionalen Pfennigs zu Ende. Der rheinische Raum öffnete sich den neuen Entwicklungen im Geldwesen, die von Italien und Frankreich mit der Ausbringung von Groschenmünzen im zwölffachen Wert des Pfennigs sowie von Goldmünzen im Wert eines Pfundes Denare ausgingen und im Laufe des 14. Jahrhunderts zu einem relativ stabilen Gold/Silber-Doppel- oder Parallelwährungssystem führten.
